NEW SPECIES – Kulans have arrived at Ranua Wildlife Park

We are thrilled to announce a heartwarming addition to our wildlife family:  Ranua Wildlife Park has become home to a brand-new species. Meet Kajo and Loimu, two young kulans who arrived from Rostock Zoo in Germany and have already made themselves at home in the Finnish north.

The turkmenian kulan (Equus hemionus kulan) is an endangered wild ass from Central Asia. With fewer than 1,500 individuals left in the wild, they are now one of the rarest large mammals in their native habitats. Once widespread from the Mediterranean to eastern Mongolia, their natural range has decreased to just a fraction – under three percent – of what it once was.

Ranua Wildlife Park is proud to take part in the EAZA Ex-situ Programme (EEP), an international conservation initiative. Through this programme, we aim to protect and strengthen the captive population of kulans, while also raising awareness about the species and its endangered status.

Our keepers describe Kajo and Loimu as alert, playful, and quick to learn. Their lively eyes, twitching ears, and wagging tails have already made an impression. They are naturally curious, and not shy about showing off to the camera.

At Ranua, we believe authenticity touches the soul . The story of the kulans reminds us why nature conservation matters. Here, you can encounter animals rarely seen in the wild and contribute to the preservation of biodiversity by simply visiting.

Come listen to the whisper of the Arctic. Kajo and Loimu are waiting.
