LIVING HABITS
In Finland the greylag goose can be found nearly all along the coastline of the country. The greylag goose is a large goose species breeding on the coast and in the archipelagos along the coastline. They feed primarily on grass and waterside vegetation. They may also eat algae and crops on the fields. The greylag goose often nests on islands or islets. The young ones stay their with their mothers during their first winter.
PROTECTION
The greylag goose population in Finland began declining from the end of the 1800’s onwards due to persecution and harassment. In the 1950’s the greylag goose became a protected species in the country and ever since the population has increased steadily. The greylag goose is a game bird; the annual quarry is 4 000-7 000 individuals.
ADAPTING TO WINTER
The greylag goose migrates to the West and Northwest Europe for winter grounds. Some may winter in the southern parts of Russia.

Breeding: The female lays 4-9- eggs in April-May, incubation period: 28-29 days and nights. Independent their first winter, sexual maturity reached in 3 years.
Lifespan: According to ringing data, the oldest greylag goose has lived to 23 years of age.
